1. Why are you giving TaxPilot to tax professionals away for free ?
We are giving TaxPilot for free because it is a new product, also so that our users can become familiar with our new software.
2. Where are my tax return data files stored?
The data that you enter in the program is be default stored in files on your hard drive under C:\Documents and Settings\user computer name\Local Settings\Application Data\TaxTron\TaxPilot\UserData\T08
The tax returns are never transmitted to TaxTron and we suggest that you back up data to protect it from any potential hardware or software problems.

3. Are there any exclusions for TaxPilot?

TaxPilot has requested the following exclusions for this year. French support, TaxPilot this year is an English only product Spousal linking, TaxPilot this year cannot link tax returns together, any spousal transfers must be done manually through the Spouse page and Schedule 2. Quebec Provincial tax returns Steps mode is meant for only simple tax returns Help is not available. We fully anticipate on eliminating these exclusions before the next tax season beginning in February 2010.

4. How do I prepare spousal returns?
TaxPilot does not currently does not currently support linking tax returns. You will need to prepare two separate returns and manually enter the spousal information on your return and vice versa.

5. Why does the TaxTron channel comes up with a page cannot be displayed message?
The TaxTron channel is a direct link to the TaxTron website. If you are not currently connected to the internet you’ll receive a message that the page cannot be displayed.

6. How do I change the province of the return?
To change the province of your return you need to click on the Review ID Section toolbar button at the top of the screen. After you click on the icon the ID section will appear, click on the Status tab at the top of the window and you will be able to change the province on your return by selecting a new province from the drop down menu. After changing the province press OK.

7. How do I make a claim for the disability amount on line 316 of Schedule 1?
While filling the personal information in the Review ID section the taxpayer has to click on the box appearing on the Status tab. Check mark on Taxpayer is disabled then the disability amount will be claimed on line 316 of Schedule1.

8. How do I prepare my Quebec tax return?
TaxPilot does not support the Quebec TP1 provincial tax return. You are still able to prepare your Federal Quebec tax return with TaxPilot. We plan on implementing support for the Quebec TP1 provincial tax return by the start of the next tax season in February 2010.

9. How do I claim line 367 Amount for children born in 1991 or later?
If you have children born in 1991 or later, you can make the claim for this credit by opening the Taxpayer/Spouse page and then scrolling down the page a little bit. On the middle of the page there is section called “Amount for children born in 1991 or later”. Once you check mark this box you will receive a credit on line 367.

10. How do I navigate from one page to another?
Click on the Form Manager on then left and then select All in the lower left hand corner. You will then see a list of all the forms. Once you double click on a Form it will add it to your return and make it the active form in the window.
You can also click on the various tabs at the top to switch between pages that are already included in your return.

11. How do I resize the Step window at the bottom?
To resize the Step Window you can click on the View menu and select the Steps mode menu.

12. I want to prepare my return in French, how do I do that with TaxPilot?
TaxPilot does not include the ability to prepare a return in French this year. We are looking to add this ability by next tax season in February 2010.

13. I mistyped my address, how do I change it?
You can change your address by clicking on the Review ID Section icon that is located in the toolbar.

14. I mistyped my birth date, how do I change it?
On the top left corner there is icon called Review ID Section. Clicks on it then you will be able to change the birth date on the birth date section and click OK.

15. I mistyped my Social Insurance Number, how do I change it?
TaxPilot does not allow you to change the SIN. If the SIN is incorrectly entered you will need to prepare a fresh tax return.

16. How do I look at the second page of a multi-page form?
When viewing a multiple page form in TaxPilot you will see tabs on the left hand side of the form. You can then select the tabs on the left hand side to access the specific page you wish to see.

17. How do I claim the spousal amount?
To claim the Spousal amount you need to access the Taxpayer/Spouse page and fill in the details of their spouse include their net income.

18. How do I claim an eligible dependant?
To make a claim for an eligible dependant you need to click the Dependant’s page from the top row of tabs. Then with the Dependent page active you need to enter the details of your dependant and place a check mark on “Amount for an eligible dependent” near the top of the page. If you meet the other requirements for this credit you will see the claim on line 305 of Schedule 1.

19. How do I claim infirm dependants over the age of 18?
To make a claim for an infirm dependant over the age of 18 you need to click the Dependant’s page from the top row of tabs. Then with the Dependent page active you need to enter the details of your dependant and place a check mark on “eligible for disability amount” under Mental or Physical impairment. The taxpayer can claim either the infirm dependant over the age of 18 credit on line 306 or the caregiver credit on line 315, which ever is more beneficial.

20. How do I claim the Canadian employment amount?
TaxPilot automatically calculates the Canadian employment amount credit when there has been employment income declared on line 101 or line 104. You will see this credit appear on line 363 of Schedule 1.

21. How do I claim the public transit amount? To enter the amount that was paid for Public transit passes you need to click on the Other Federal Credits page. You need to enter the total amount that you have spent on public transit passes. The taxpayer should keep all the passes in case Canada Revenue requests them.

22. How do I claim the children’s fitness amount?
To make a claim for the children’s fitness amount 18 you need to click the Dependant’s page from the top row of tabs. Then with the Dependent page active you need to enter the details of your dependant and then enter the amount under the Children’s Fitness amount section in the middle of the page. Only parents are eligible to claim the child fitness amount, up to a maximum of $500 or if the child is disabled up to a maximum of $1000.

23. Where do I enter my adoption expenses?
To make a claim for the Adoptions expenses, which you incurred you, need to click the Dependant’s page from the top row of tabs. Then with the Dependent page active you need to enter the details of your dependant and then in the section called Adoption expenses located in the middle of the page you can enter the total amount of adoption expenses that you are claiming.

24. How do I enter my pension income amount?
To enter your pension income you need to declare pension income on line 115 or line 116 of your tax return. Filling in a T4A slip with box 16 will enter line 115 and receiving pension income from your spouse via the T1032 Pension Splitting form will enter income on line 116.

25. Where do I enter my tuition amount?
To claim your Tuition on a TaxPilot you need to include the T2202a slip. You can add the T2202A slip by accessing the list of forms on the left and double click on the T2202a entry. The T2202A slip will be added to your return and will open for you to enter the details of your claim.

26. Where do I enter my unused tuition from previous years? To claim your unused Federal and Provincial unused tuition amounts you need to add both the federal and provincial Schedule 11’s to your tax return by double clicking on the appropriate Schedule 11 from the form manager list. You can then enter the unused amount of tuition from previous years in the first line of both the federal and provincial schedule 11. Your unused tuition amount is included on your Notice of assessment or Notice of reassessment that you received after filing your tax return last year.

27. Where do I enter the interest I paid on my student loan?
To claim the interest that you paid on a student loan you need to access the Other Federal Credits page by clicking’s its tab at the top of the window. At the top of the Other Federal Credits page you will see the section to enter the interest you paid on your student loan.

28. How do I enter my medical expenses?
To enter your Medical Expenses you need to include the ME (Medical Expenses) page from the list of forms in the form manager. Then enter the amount you have spent on medical care for self, spouse or dependant children under 18 years of age.

29. How do I enter my age amount?
TaxPilot automatically calculates the age amount based on the taxpayers age. To claim the age amount the taxpayer must be 65 years of age or older as of December 31st. The claim will automatically be made on line 301 of Schedule and the corresponding line of your provincial 428 pages, if your income does not exceed the threshold amount.

30. How do I enter medical expenses for a dependent over 18?
To enter Medical Expenses for a Dependant over the age of 18 Expenses you need to include the DMed (Medical expense) page from the list of forms in the form manager as well you need to have already have filled in the dependant information for any dependants you wish to claim medical expenses for.

31. How do I enter my charitable donations?
To enter your charitable donations you need to select the charitable donations page from the top row of tabs. Then you just need to fill in the details of your donations.

32. I’ve made more than 16 charitable donations, how do I add more than 16 entries?
If you made more than 16 charitable donations you will need to sum up the additional donations and enter them on one line. TaxPilot is not capable of adding more than sixteen entries for charitable donations.

33. How do I enter my dependants?
To enter your dependants you need to access the dependent page by clicking on the Dependants tab at the top of the screen. You have to enter the dependants name, age, and relationship to the dependant, along with the income of the dependant as a minimum. There are various other entries on this page, which will allow you to claim various federal and provincial credits. Review the page and fill in whatever applies to this particular dependant.

34. How do I enter annual union, professional or like dues that are not reported on my T4’s?
To enter your annual union, professional or like dues that were not reported on a T4 slip you need to access the Deduction Worksheet page by selecting its tab at the top of the screen. You can then enter the amount on the appropriate line.

35. How do I enter support payments I’ve received?
To enter the support payments that you received you need to access the Income Worksheet tab at the top of the screen. Then in the middle of the page there is section called Support payment received. You can enter the amount on that line.

36. How do I enter support payments I paid?
To enter the support payments you paid you need to access the Deduction Worksheet tab at the top of the page. There is section called Support payments paid. You can enter the amount on the line 230 and line 220, if the support payment qualifies for a deduction. Note that Line 220 should always be less than Line 230.

37. How do I add a page to my tax return?
To add a page to your tax return you need to access the Form Manager located in the lower left hand corner, by clicking on it. Once the Form Manager is active you will see a list of the forms available to you. Find the form you want to open and double click on it, the page will be added in your return and you can then enter your data on the page.

38. How do I enter Moving Expenses?
You can enter your moving expenses by adding the T1_M (Moving Expenses) page from the form manager. Once you have added the form you can then enter your various moving expenses. You can claim moving expenses against the income you earn after moving to your new residence. You can only claim moving expenses if the distance between you old residence and your new residence is more than 40 kilometers.

39. My moving expenses are not showing up on line 219?
If you are not seeing your moving expenses being claimed at line 219 You need to make sure that you entered the income that you earned after you moved at the bottom of the T1M page on line 19.

40. How do I enter my RRSP’s ?
To enter your RRSP contributions you need to add the RRSP page from the form manager. Once the page is added you can enter the RRSP contributions that you made. You will also need to enter your contribution limit. Your RRSP contribution limit is included on your Notice of Assessment or your Notice of Reassessment from last year’s tax return.

41. Why are my RRSP’s not showing on line 208?
Your RRSP contributions may not be showing on line 208 as you may have not entered the correct date that the RRSP was purchased on. To claim an RRSP on this year’s tax return, the RRSP must have been purchase between March 1st, 2008 and March 2nd, 2009. You may have also have forgotten to enter your RRSP contribution limit. The RRSP contribution limit is entered in the middle of the RRSP page. Your RRSP contribution limit is included on your Notice of Assessment or your Notice of Reassessment from last year’s tax return.

42. How do I split my pension income with my spouse?
To split your pension income with your spouse you must first have eligible pension income declared on line 115. You need to add the PSplit (Pension split WS) page from the form list, once the page is added you can enter the amount of pension that wish to transfer to your spouse. You need to fill out the Pension Split WS twice, once on the taxpayers return who is transferring there pension using section A and the other spouse who is receiving the pension using section B. You cannot split more than 50% of your pension income.

43. How do I enter my capital gains?
To enter your capital gains that are not included on a T slip you need to add the Schedule 3 (S3) detail-1 page to your return. You have to enter each type of gain on its own page.

44. How do I enter my capital gains deduction?
To claim Capital Gains Deduction you need to add the T657 (Capital gains deduction) page from the Form Manager by double clicking on it. Once the page is added then you should be able to enter the details for your capital gains deduction.

45. How do I enter my investment expenses?
To enter your investment expenses you need to add Schedule 4 (S4you’re your return by using the Forms Manager. You can enter the investment expenses you incurred near the bottom of the page under the heading “Carrying charges and interest expenses.”

46. How do I split my T3 income with my spouse?
To split your T3 income with your spouse you need to add the T3 slip to your return using the form manager. Then on the T3 slip enter the data as it is on the T3 slip that was issued to you. Then in the middle of the page there is an option to split the T3 with another taxpayer enter the percentage that you wish to transfer and then click on the option that you are transferring the amount to your spouse. Once that is done on the taxpayers return you need to perform the same action on the spouses return but using the opposite percentage rate. .

47. How can I claim tuition transferred to me by a dependant?
Open the dependent page that you want transferred from then on the middle of the page there is section called Tuition and Education amount. You can enter the amount you want to transfer in that box.

48. How do I Netfile a tax return?
On the top left of the window there is File menu and under File menu, there is Netfile. Click on Netfile then you should be able to do Netfile. You have to follow the certain steps to Netfile your return 
  • Open your tax return 
  •  Go to ‘File’ and click on ‘Netfile’, the program will do automatic recalculations.
  • Review the diagnostic messages and go back and fix anything that needs to be corrected before you file your return.
  • Click the finish bottom to close the diagnostics window while reviewing the last diagnostic.
  • A window will appear asking you to save your tax return. Save the file to the desktop and ensure that it is a .TAX file. Then click ‘Save’.
  • A window will appear and will ask if you want to connect to CRA now or later. Select ‘Now’.
  • Your internet browser will open and take you to the Netfile website.
  • Read the information on the page and when you are ready to proceed click on the "I agree with the Terms and Conditions - proceed" button.
  • Enter in your SIN, date of birth and access code.
  • If you don't have an access code, go to http://www.netfile.gc.ca/ccsscd-eng.html .
  • Scroll down the page to Step 2 and click on the Browse button, Taxpilot usually saves your .tax file in the My Documents folder under the Taxpilot files folder. Select your .tax file and click on Open.
  • Scroll down to Step 3 and if you have a Balance Owing and you will be making a payment within the next 5 days, select the option.
  • Click on "I Agree. File My return now!"
  • Record the confirmation number
49. How do I recalculate the tax return?
TaxPilot automatically recalculates the tax return on a continual basis based on your inputs. However if you are not seeing what you are expecting to see you can manually force a recalculation of the tax return by pressing the F5 key on your keyboard.

50. When I preview my tax return, I only see a Summary of the tax return, how do I see the other pages?
When you use the Print Preview command from the File menu you are shown one page at a time by default. To see other pages of the return you can click on the scroller in the upper right hand corner beside the page number. Clicking Up will show you the Next page and clicking on the down button will show you the previous page. You can also use the scroll button on the mouse to go to the next and previous pages.
51. When I try to start TaxPilot I receive an error message: The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000135). Click OK to terminate the application.
